The fact that he was diagnosed with severe antisocial personality disorder (APD) as a child may explain why he is so introverted. His adolescent years were spent recovering from the disorder.

Chopra was born on May 21, 1971. His parents are the late filmmaker Yash Chopra and Pamela Chopra. He concluded his formal education at Bombay Scottish School and obtained his Indian Certificate of Secondary Education. Along with Anil Thadani, Karan Johar, and Abhishek Kapoor, he matriculated from Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics.
Chopra began his film career at age 18 as an assistant director, assisting his father on such films as Chandni (1989), Lamhe (1991), and Darr (1993). Additionally, he wrote his first screenplays for his father’s 1992 film Parampara and his mother’s 1993 independently produced film Aaina. At the age of 23, he began independently producing the romantic comedy-drama Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, which went on to become one of the greatest hits of all time and won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. His next film as a director was the musical romantic drama Mohabbatein, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Shahrukh Khan, which also marked the debut of his sibling Uday Chopra in the film industry. In June 2002, he released the romantic comedy Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai, in which his sibling Uday starred alongside Tulip Joshi, Bipasha Basu, and Jimmy Sheirdill.
Chopra produced Hum Tum in 2004.
The film had a budget of 70 crores ($8.8 million) and was released on 2,900 screens around the globe on December 9, 2016. The currency demonetisation enacted by the Government of India a few days before the film’s release resulted in pervasive negative reviews and significant business losses. After a two-week theatrical run at the global box office, the film grossed 63 crores (US$7.9 million), failing to achieve break-even business for YRF.
He was previously married to Payal Khanna until their 2009 divorce. The couple were childless. He married actress Rani Mukerji in a private ceremony in Italy on April 21, 2014. Rani gave birth to their daughter Adira Chopra in December 2015.
Throughout his three-decade career, he has remained extremely media-averse and passive, combating constant reports of an alleged dysthymic disorder, resulting in the existence of very few public photographs of him. Chopra sat down for a lengthy interview in 2023 for the Netflix series The Romantics, which chronicles the rise of Yash Chopra and Yash Raj Films.
