Griffin attended Seton Hall University for his first three years of study. As a senior, he averaged 16.2 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game, good enough to make the All-Big East second team. In 2010, Griffin was inducted into the Seton Hall Athletics Hall of Fame.

Griffin was not selected in the 1996 NBA draft. He played in the American minor leagues and Italy (seven games with Cordivari Roseto from July to October 1998) for the first three years of his career.

Griffin was chosen for the All-Rookie First Team in 1997 while he was a member of the Continental Basketball Association’s Connecticut Pride. In 1998, he was selected for the Pride’s First Teams—All-Defensive and All-CBA.

Griffin won the title of Finals Most Valuable Player in 1998–1999 while guiding the Pride to the CBA championship. His selections to the All-Defensive and All-CBA First Teams were matched with the title of CBA’s Most Valuable Player.

From 1999 to 2000, Griffin participated in the National Basketball Association (NBA) with the Boston Celtics. In his debut season, he averaged 7 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 1.61 steals per game.

He spent six seasons as a player for the Boston Celtics, Dallas Mavericks, Houston Rockets, and Chicago Bulls, averaging 4.4 points, 3.3 rebounds, and one steal per game. Making the starting lineup for the Dallas Mavericks in the 2006 NBA Finals was one of the highlights of my career.

After spending one season with the Mavericks, Griffin signed a three-year contract with the Chicago Bulls on July 17, 2006. On February 21, 2008, Griffin was a part of an 11-player trade that also included players from the Seattle SuperSonics, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Chicago Bulls.

In addition to sending Mo Williams from Milwaukee to Cleveland, Joe Smith and Desmond Mason from Milwaukee to Oklahoma City, Damon Jones from Cleveland and Luke Ridnour from Oklahoma City to Milwaukee, the three teams involved in the August 13, 2008 trade that resulted in Griffin’s acquisition were the Milwaukee Bucks, the Cleveland Cavaliers, and the Oklahoma City Thunder.
