According to an article in the East Village Times, their mother Eva Saira Ariko immigrated to the United States in 1997, while pregnant with Adam, and settled in Boston with a thriving community of Ugandan expatriates.

Ariko confronted the challenge of balancing work and raising Seiko, and she worked late into the night when she had two jobs in order to be available for him during the hours he was home from school.
