On July 2, Ripken hit his first professional home run against West Palm Beach Expos pitcher Joseph Abone. The third base position fits well with our team.

During his Miami career, Ripken also led the league in doubles, five home runs, and 54 RBIs. After the season, the All-Star committee named Ripken an All-Star and he hit three home runs for the Double-A Charlotte Orioles. Ripken began his career with Charlotte in 1980.

Ripken broke the team’s record for home runs, just as his Charlotte manager had predicted. He finished the season with 25 home runs, four more than his previous record. He also had 28 doubles, 78 RBIs, and a .492 slugging mark. As Charlotte won the Southern League, Ripken was an All-Star.
