The birthplace of Charles Barkley is Leeds, Alabama. He was Frank Barkley and Charcey Glenn’s firstborn child. His childhood was difficult because his father abandoned the family when he was a child. His mother remarried Clee Glenn, and the couple had two children: Rennie and John. The former passed away as a baby. A few years later, Barkley, then 11 years old, lost Glenn in an automobile accident.
He attended Leeds High School. Early on, he developed an interest in basketball due to the influence of his environment. As a junior, he earned a spot on the basketball team despite his short stature (5′ 10″). During his senior year, he gained six inches in height and was permitted to join the varsity team. During the state semifinals of high school basketball, he scored 26 points against Bobby Lee. The assistant coach at Auburn University, Sonny Smith, was impressed with his performance and recruited him.
He participated in college athletics for three seasons. Due to his playing style, which belied his lack of height, he gained popularity. Because of his physique and abilities, he earned the nicknames “The Round Mound of Rebound” and “Cisco Kid.” Barkley played centre and received numerous accolades, including Southeastern Conference Player of the Year (1984), a selection to the All-American Second Team, and three All-SEC honours. He was later named the 1980s SEC Player of the Decade.
