His parents were farmers in Wichita, Kansas, where he was raised in extreme poverty.

Career

After graduating from Wichita South High School in 1967, he went on to study theater at the University of Kansas. After just one year, Johnson left college to join the nonprofit American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco, California. In 1969, Johnson made his stage debut in the production of the play “Fortune and Men’s Eyes.” Johnson performed in a number of films during this time, including “A Boy and His Dog” (1975), but he was never able to realize his dream of becoming a movie star.

His big break came in 1984 when he was cast in the lead role of the police television series “Miami Vice.” Johnson worked on a different project during the series’ filming: the 1985 version of “The Long, Hot Summer.” During this time, he also released his debut single, “Heartbeat.” The numerous projects he was working on at once greatly enhanced his profile. Johnson started appearing in “Nash Bridges,” another police drama, in 1996 and 2001. Being a part-owner of the series caused him legal issues in the future, forcing him to file a $23 million lawsuit against Rysher Entertainment, the production company. 2013 saw a $19 million settlement of the lawsuit.
