George Harrison Birthday

Harrison was born on February 25, 1943 in Wavertree, Liverpool. His father, Harold Hargreaves, was a bus driver, while his mother, Louise French, worked as a sales clerk. Harrison was of English and Irish descent and was a Pisces. His love for music began at a young age. According to his mother, nothing made him happier. Harrison attended Liverpool Institute High School for Boys and was dissatisfied that the music room lacked guitars. Harrison enjoyed Lonnie Donegan and many other greats as a child, but it was “Heartbreak Hotel” by Elvis Presley that sparked his interest in rock and roll.

Harrison’s father initially opposed his son’s desire to pursue a career in music, but in 1956 he bought him a Dutch Egmond acoustic guitar and had a friend teach him how to play. Harrison met Paul McCartney on the school bus one day, and the two bonded over music. By March 1958, Harrison, then 15 years old, had joined McCartney and Lennon’s band The Quarrymen. Harrison quit school at the age of 16, much to his father’s dismay. In 1960, the group toured Scotland, but Harrison was deported for being too young to work in nightclubs. The Quarrymen had evolved into The Beatles by 1963, when they released their debut album, “Please, Please Me.” The group landed in the United States in 1964 and appeared on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” By 1966, George Harrison had lost interest in being a member of The Beatles. Before the band’s dissolution in 1970, he released his debut solo album “Wonderwall Music” in November 1968 and “Electronic Sound” in 1969.

Harrison released eleven more solo albums, including 1973’s “Living in the Material World” and 1979’s “George Harrison.” The former topped the Billboard album chart for five consecutive weeks! Harrison was a prominent Hindu believer at the time and had completed multiple tours. His solo career and membership in the Beatles band are complementary. Harrison, McCartney, Ringo Starr, and Jeff Lynne collaborated on the “Beatles Anthology” project in 1994, which featured multiple singles released between 1970 and that year. Unfortunately, shortly after the completion of the project, Harrison was diagnosed with throat cancer and required surgery in 2001. On November 29, 2001, he passed away on McCartney’s property, surrounded by loved ones. Harrison was survived by his wife, Olivia Arias, whom he married in 1978 following his separation from model Pattie Boyd. His son with Arias was named Dhani. Harrison led an extraordinary life and died as a musical legend.
