Harry S. Truman Birthday

One of the finest leaders of the United States, Harry S. Truman was born on May 8, 1884. Born to John and Martha Truman, he was their firstborn son. Truman, who was called after his uncle Harrison, has ancestry from the British Isles, the European continent, and France. Early in his life, he worked as a farmer and a cattle dealer. Truman took up the piano when he was young and practised diligently every morning at 5 a.m. until he was 15 years old. After a year of attending Spalding’s Commercial College to learn bookkeeping and shorthand, he had to leave due to financial difficulties. His bad eyesight prevented him from serving in the military, but he joined the Missouri National Guard anyhow in 1905.

Truman was not enthusiastic about becoming vice president because he was afraid of the scrutiny that would come with the position. He did not actively seek nomination, yet it was given to him nevertheless. On January 20, 1945, he was sworn in alongside President Franklin D. Roosevelt as Vice President of the United States. After serving as vice president for 82 days until Roosevelt’s death in April 1945, Truman was then inaugurated as president. From 1945 to 1949, he served as president and was instrumental in bringing an end to the war in Europe.

From 1949 through 1953, Truman was in office for a second time. In 1949, he proposed a set of domestic policies known as The Fair Deal, which included free healthcare for all, more funding for schools, and a higher minimum wage. NATO and the Truman Doctrine were both initiatives that fell under Truman’s purview. In 1948, he oversaw the Marshall Plan and the Berlin Airlift; in 1959, he received a 50-year award from the Masons; in 1973, a sports complex in Kansas City, Kansas, was named after him (the Truman Sports Complex); and in 1975, the Truman Scholarship was established to recognise outstanding U.S. college students who are committed to public leadership and service policy.

Truman surmounted a number of political obstacles, including the Fourth Cold War and the Korean War. His life was rich and complete. He decided not to seek reelection in 1952 and subsequently left office. His autobiography, “Years of Decisions,” was published in 1955. On December 26th, 1972, Truman passed away. Magaret, his only child with wife Bess Wallace, was named after him. He was a Democrat.
