Jaleel White Biography: Jaleel Ahmad White, born November 27, 1976, is an American actor, writer, and producer best known for his role as Steve Urkel on the television show “Family Matters.” Urkel was scheduled to be a one-time visitor but quickly became a popular favourite, thus White became a show regular. White was the first person to ever play Sonic the Hedgehog in animated media. He also appeared in “Dreamgirls,” “Bones,” and “The Big Show Show.” He has also appeared as a guest star on shows such as “House,” “Castle,” and “Psych.”

Jaleel White’s Early Life

Jaleel Ahmad White was born to Michael and Gail White in Culver City, California. He attended U.C.L.A. after high school and graduated in 2001. White began acting in preschool and began starring in television advertisements when he was three, including one with Bill Cosby for Jell-O pudding pops. His debut television appearance was on “The Jeffersons” in 1984. He appeared in “Charlie and Company” the next year until the show was discontinued in 1986. White went on to appear in a few other brief-lived television shows.

Jaleel White Career

White’s major break came when he was 12 years old and cast in the one-time role of Steve Urkel on “Family Matters.” The character was only scheduled to appear on the show once, but White quickly became a fan favorite, and he became a regular. Urkel became so popular that White frequently appeared in ads as the character. The show lasted nine seasons and finished in 1998. White had apparently grown to despise the character by that point.

White was hired as the initial English voice of Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog in 1993. He voiced Sonic the Hedgehog in the films “Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog,” “Sonic SatAM,” “Sonic Underground,” and “Sonic Christmas Blast.” Since then, he has acted in films such as “Dreamgirls,” “Bones,” and, most recently, Netflix’s “The Big Show Show.” He also appeared on popular television shows such as “House,” “Castle,” and “Psych.” White and ex-girlfriend Bridget Hardy have one daughter, Samaya, who was born in 2009.
