Malcolm X Birthday

Born Malcolm Little, Malcolm X was born in Omaha, Nebraska, United States. His father, Earl Little, was a Baptist minister and a local leader of the Universal Negro Improvement Association or UNIA. From the 1920s to the 1930s, his mother Louise Helen Little served as the national secretary of the Marcus Garvey Movement. Malcolm X had six siblings.

Since infancy, Malcolm X has witnessed and experienced racial violence. His father’s civil rights activism prompted the Black Legion, a white supremacist terrorist organisation, to issue murder threats, forcing the family to relocate in 1926 to Milwaukee and then Lansing, Michigan. In 1929, Malcolm X’s Michigan home was destroyed by fire, and his father was discovered dead; both incidents were declared to be accidents by the police. After her husband’s death, Malcolm X’s mother endured financial and emotional hardships for several years, and in 1938, she was committed to a mental institution following a nervous collapse. Her children were placed in various orphanages and foster homes, and she was released 24 years later. In 1941, despite his talent, Malcolm X dropped out of school because a white teacher informed him that his desire to practise law as a black man was unrealistic. Between the ages of 14 and 21, he resided with his sister in Roxbury, Boston, and held a variety of occupations. He relocated to Harlem, New York, in 1943. Three years later, he was convicted of burglary and given a ten-year prison sentence (paroled after seven years). However, Malcolm X utilised this time to educate himself. Malcolm X was inspired by his brother Reginald, a member of the Nation of Islam (NOI), to study the teachings of Elijah Muhammad, the leader of NOI.

In 1952, following his parole, he joined the NOI as minister and national spokesman, eventually becoming one of the organization’s most prominent and well-known leaders. In 1964, he quit the organisation. After surviving multiple assassination attempts, Malcolm X was murdered on February 21, 1965, by three gunmen subsequently identified as NOI members. Over 14,000 individuals attended his funeral, and his legacy has endured for generations.
