Mehboob Khan Biography: Mehboob Khan (born Mehboob Khan Ramzan Khan; 9 September 1907– 28 May 1964) was a pioneer producer-director of Indian cinema, best known for directing Mother India (1957), which won the Filmfare Awards for Best Film and Best Director, two National Film Awards, and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. In 1954, he established his production company, Mehboob Productions, and a film facility, Mehboob Studios, in Bandra, Mumbai.

Early years

On September 9, 1907, Khan was born Mehboob Khan Ramzan Khan in Bilimora, Gandevi Taluka, Baroda State (now Gujarat).

Mehboob Khan Career

Noor Muhammad Ali Muhammed Shipra Baddhiyawala, an Indian film producer and horse supplier, moved him to Bombay from his hometown in Gujarat to work as a horseshoe repairer in a stable that he owned. Mehboob expressed interest in collaborating with South Indian director Chandrashekhar during one of his filming days. Chandrashekhar requested permission from Noor Muhammad Ali Muhammed Shipra Baddhiyawala to take Mehboob with him to work in the film studios of Bombay after observing his keen interest and talent. He began his career as an assistant director during the Silent Film era and as an extra in the studios of Ardeshir Irani’s Imperial Film Company, before directing his first film Al Hilal a.k.a. Judgement of Allah (1935) for the Sagar Film Company. He directed the notable films Deccan Queen (1936), Ek Hi Raasta (1939), Alibaba (1940), Aurat (1940), and Bahen (1941) for Sagar Movietone and National Studios.

Khan founded his own production company, Mehboob Productions, in 1945. He directed the 1946 musical success Anmol Ghadi, which starred Surendra, Noor Jehan, and Suraiya. Khan went on to produce and direct numerous blockbuster films, the most notable of which were the 1949 romantic drama Andaz, the 1951 swashbuckling musical Aan, the 1954 melodrama Amar, and the 1957 social epic Mother India. It was a remake of his 1940 film Aurat and was nominated for an Academy Award in 1957. His earlier works were written in Urdu, but his later works, including Mother India, were written in Hindustani, a version of Hindi and Urdu with a gentler and softer accent.

Mehboob Khan Personal Life

Mehboob Khan had two marriages. He had three sons with his first wife, Fatima: Ayub, Iqbal, and Shaukat. In 1942, following his divorce from his first wife, he wed the renowned Indian film actress Sardar Akhtar (1915–1988). Born on 28 December 1951, Sajid Khan has starred in both Indian and international English-language films.

Mehboob Khan Death

On May 28, 1964, Mehboob Khan perished of a heart attack.[11] In September 2007, as part of his centenary celebrations, the Indian postal department issued a commemorative stamp of Mehboob Khan at a ceremony conducted at the Mehboob Studios.
Khan established the courtyard of Mehboob Studios in Bandra (West), Mumbai, in 1954. In 1964, at the age of 56, he died of a heart attack and was interred at Badakabarastan in Marine Lines, Mumbai. His demise occurred one day after that of India’s former prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.
