Morris Day Biography

Early Life

On December 13, 1957, Morris Day was born in Springfield, Illinois. Though he is best known as the captivating lead singer of The Time, he is also a very talented musician and songwriter.

He went to school with Prince and André Cymone, the three of them going by the name Champagne before renaming their early band Grand Central. When Prince started his solo career later, he kept Cymone as his backing band.

Both started putting together a new group that would sound more R&B, and Prince would experiment with other musical genres. Prince forms The Time, a brand-new band. Day wrote a song called “Partyup” for Prince’s album “Dirty Mind,” and Prince soon returned the favor by assigning Day to lead vocals on The Time. He recommended Jesse Johnson for guitar, rounding out the band’s line-up.

Career

Day’s role as Prince’s antagonist in the 1984 film “Purple Rain” cemented Day’s on-stage persona as a playboy and marked the band’s most significant and noticeable period. His inflated conceit won him thousands of admirers, and his persona was further exploited for comedic effect on his band’s records, particularly in the tracks “If the Kid Can’t Make You Come” and “Chili Sauce” from the album “Ice Cream Castle.” Day is still a popular show attraction today, leading a redesigned The Time lineup. His “personal security,” Jerome Benton, is still collaborating with him on his shows.
