Her parents were both involved in politics, as her father served as a Maryland congressman for the Democratic Party and later became the mayor of Baltimore. Her mother also taught her the importance of social networking. Pelosi was exposed to politics at an early age due to the fact that her brother Thomas D’Alesandro the Third was the mayor of Baltimore from 1967 to 1971.

Pelosi aided her father at campaign events when she was small, including attending John F. Kennedy’s inaugural address in January 1961. In 1958, she graduated from the all-girls catholic secondary school Institute of Notre Dame in Baltimore, and in 1962, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Trinity College in Washington, D.C. In the 1960s, she continued to intern for Senator Daniel Brewster. She was elected to the California Democratic National Committee in 1976 and served in that capacity until 1996. In 1977, she was elected as a co-chair for Northern California. After four years, she was elected leader of the California Democratic Party, a position she held until 1983. In 1984, she was the chairwoman of the Host Committee for the Democratic National Convention in San Francisco. From 1985 to 1986, she was the chairwoman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee’s finance committee.

Pelosi was re-elected for her fourth term as speaker of the House of Representatives on January 3, 2021. During her second term, she contributed to the passage of the two main bills of the Biden administration: the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and the American Rescue Plan Act. In January 2022, she declared her intention to run for reelection as a U.S. representative that year.
