Padmarajan Biography: Padmarajan Padmanabhan Pillai, popularly known as P.Padmarajan (23 May 1945 – 24 January 1991), was an Indian film director, screenwriter, and author renowned for his contributions to Malayalam literature and film.[1] In the 1980s, he co-founded a new school of filmmaking in Malayalam cinema with Bharathan and K. G. George.

Early years

Padmarajan was born on May 23, 1945, in Muthukulam, close to Haripad, in Alappuzha, which was then a princely state governed by Travancore. His parents were Thundathil Anantha Padmanabha Pillai and Njavarakkal Devaki Amma. After completing elementary school in Muthukulam, he attended Mahatma Gandhi College and University College in Thiruvananthapuram, graduating in 1963 with a Bachelor of Science in chemistry. Subsequently, he studied Sanskrit with the Muthukulam scholar Cheppad Achyutha Warrier. He joined All India Radio, Trichur (1965) as a programme announcer, and settled in Poojappura, Trivandrum (1968); he remained at All India Radio until 1986, when his involvement in cinema prompted him to retire voluntarily.

Career

The majority of Padmarajan’s works focused on deceit, murder, romance, intrigue, passion, jealousy, libertarianism, anarchism, individualism, social structure, human psychology, and the lives of marginalised members of society. His works were frequently influenced by actual people and events, such as the tragic story of a woman who committed suicide after her lover abandoned her. Padmarajan wrote the screenplays for all of the films that he directed. His 1971 novel, Nakshathrangale Kaaval, was awarded the Kerala Sahithya Academy prize in 1972. He entered the realm of Malayalam cinema by writing the screenplay for Prayanam (1975), the first film directed by Bharathan and shot by Balu Mahendra.

His third film as a screenwriter, Rappadikalude Gatha (1978), won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Story in 1978. His next film as a screenwriter was the 1978 erotic classic Rathinirvedam. Padmarajan made his directorial début in 1979 with the film Peruvazhiyambalam, which won the National Film Award for Best Malayalam Feature Film and was included on IBN Live’s list of the 100 greatest Indian films of all time. He then directed Oridathoru Phayalvaan, Novemberinte Nashtam, Koodevide?, Kanamarayathu, Desatanakkili Karayarilla, Thinkalazhcha Nalla Divasam, Kariyilakkattu Pole, Arappatta Kettiya Gramathil, Kariyilakkattu Pole, Thoovanathumbikal, Season, Aparan, Moonnam Pakkam, Innale, and Njan Gandharvan.

Through his association with other directors such as Bharathan, I. V. Sasi, and Mohan, he contributed to their rise to prominence. Padmarajan is renowned for his collaboration as a screenwriter with Bharathan, as well as his understudies who went on to direct films independently. His attention to detail in his screenplays, which frequently depicted human relationships and emotions, has earned him widespread acclaim.

Personal Life

Padmarajan’s wife Radhalakshmi is from Chittur in Palakkad. Before their marriage in 1970, Radhalakshmi was his coworker at AIR. In her book Padmarajan Entaey Gandharvan (Padmarajan, my celestial beloved), Radhalakshmi recounts her memories of him. P. Ananthapadmanabhan, their son, is a writer.

Padmarajan died abruptly at the Hotel Paramount Towers in Calicut on January 24, 1991, while he was watching his final film, Njan Gandharvan, in a nearby theatre. Death was caused by a catastrophic cardiac arrest.
