Early Life

December 29, 1973, saw the birth of Chad Mathew Lamont Butler, better known by his stage as Pimp C, in Crowley, Louisiana. He was the sole child of Charleston Butler and Weslyn “Mama Wes” Butler Jacob Monroe. In Port Arthur, Texas, he was raised. He developed an early interest in music since his father was a trumpet player. In his teens, he played multiple instruments in the school band and was a member of the chorus.

Career

The hip-hop trio Run-DMC had a major effect on most of his earlier work. Bill Monroe, his stepfather, inspired him to compose songs and pursue his musical career. Because of their mutual love of music, he soon became friends with Bernard “Bun B” Freeman, who would go on to join the rap group Underground Kingz, or U.G.K., in 1987. The two EPs, “The Southern Way” and “Banned,” were released in 1992 after the pair joined with Big Tyme Recordz, an indie label. Following their middling success, U.G.K. earned a record deal with Jive Records. “Too Hard to Swallow,” their debut major-label album, was released in November 1992.

On the U.S. Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, it peaked at number 37. “Super Tight,” U.G.K.’s subsequent album, was released in 1994. It debuted at number nine on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and ranked 95th on the Billboard 200, demonstrating its commercial and critical success. “Ridin’ Dirty,” which came out in 1996, was their most popular album. It peaked at number fifteen on the Billboard 200 and finished second on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The album has sold over 850,000 copies so far.

The pair reunited in 2000 as featured artists on Jay-Z’s hit song “Big Pimpin” and Three 6 Mafia’s hit song “Sippin’ on Some Syrup,” after a brief break in the late 1990s. Following the release of their fourth studio album, “Dirty Money,” in 2001, U.G.K.’s profile skyrocketed. Sadly, after his arrest, the group was forced to take another break. In March 2005, he released “The Sweet James Jones Stories,” his debut solo album. Songs that he recorded before to his imprisonment are included in it. The coroner’s findings stated that his pre-existing sleep apnea and purported overconsumption of “purple drank” were the cause of his death. His body was delivered to Port Arthur, Texas, not long after. On December 13, 2007, the Bob Bowers Civic Center hosted his funeral.
