He resided with his family in Kensington Palace and spent his weekends with them at Highgrove House, a family residence in Gloucestershire. His parents divorced in 1996, and on August 31, 1997, his mother perished in a car accident in Paris. Following such a devastating loss, Prince Harry returned to Ludgrove to complete his education.

On May 8, 2005, he began his officer training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, and on April 13, 2006, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Blues and Royals. In 2006, it was announced that Prince Harry could be deployed to Iraq in 2007. This sparked controversy. In 2007-2008, he spent 77 days as a covert forward air controller in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. During this deployment, Prince Harry became the first member of the British Royal Family to serve in a conflict zone. On April 13, 2008, he received the rank of Lieutenant. He was bestowed the Operational Duty Medal for Afghanistan in May 2008 for his military service in Afghanistan, which included patrolling dangerous areas and assisting the Gurkha Brigade in repelling Taliban insurgents. Prince Harry has made the decision to become an Apache helicopter pilot. After meeting the prerequisites, he began training at the Defence Helicopter Flying School at RAF Shawbury, and on April 14, 2011, he received his Apache Flying Badge. On April 16 of that year, he was promoted to the rank of captain. The Ministry of Defence announced on July 8, 2013 that Prince Harry had concluded his training as an Apache aircraft commander. He was appointed Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (KCVO) on June 4, 2015, and retired from the Armed Forces on June 19, 2015. His patronage has been retained by numerous organisations and charities, including the HALO Trust, Well Child, Walking With The Wounded, and the London Marathon Charitable Trust. In September 2009, he and Prince William established The Foundation of Prince William and Prince Harry to further their charitable efforts.
