Raai Laxmi was born as Lakshmi Rai in Bangalore, Karnataka on 5 May 1989 to a Tulu-speaking father, Ram Rai, and a Gujarati-speaking mother, Manjula Rai. She has two older sisters, Reshma and Ashwini. She began her career as a model for Sylcon Footwears, Josco Jewellers, Saravana Stores, Emmanuel Silks, Bru Coffee, and Fair & Lovely, among others.
In 2005, Laxmi made her debut in the Tamil film industry with the film Karka Kasadara. She then appeared in Tamil films such as Kundakka Mandakka, Dharmapuri, and Nenjai Thodu, which were all average box office performers. She made her Malayalam film début in 2007 with Mohanlal’s Rock N’ Roll. Laxmi was praised for her convincing portrayal of a female playback vocalist, even though the film was a commercial failure. Even after a number of mainstream films in the South Indian film industry, Laxmi had to wait until 2008 for her real taste of success, which she achieved with films such as Velli Thirai, in which she starred as herself, and Dhaam Dhoom, for which she received her first Filmfare nomination for Best Supporting Actress in Tamil.
In 2009, she starred alongside Mohanlal in the blockbuster Malayalam film Evidam Swargamanu. Laxmi was nominated for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress in Malayalam and won the Asianet Most Popular Actress Award, the Jai Hind TV Film Award for Most Popular Actress, and the Jai Hind TV Film Award for Most Popular Actress.
She subsequently starred in a number of successful films, including Christian Brothers, Kanchana, Mankatha, Casanova, Irumbu Kottai Murattu Singam, and Aranmanai. Laxmi entered the Hindi film industry in 2016 with films such as Akira alongside Sonakshi Sinha and Julie 2 alongside Ravi Kishan. In 2019, she will release the films Neeya 2 and Officer Arjun Singh IPS.
