Ryan Bader, who was born in Reno, Nevada, began wrestling at the age of seven. After a successful amateur wrestling career, he transitioned to mixed martial arts. As a senior at Robert McQueen High School, he had already won two state wrestling championships and was ranked as high as fourth in the nation.

In 2001, Bader helped the McQueen Lancers win the Nevada state football title, and he was named the state’s defensive player of the year. Bader ultimately received a wrestling scholarship to Arizona State University, where he competed with current UFC lightweight champion CB Dollaway and former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez.

Bader won three consecutive Pac-10 Conference Tournaments while attending Arizona State University. The years in question were 2003, 2004 and 2006. Moreover, he was named All-America as a sophomore in 2004 and as a senior in 2006, finishing fourth and seventh at the NCAA championships, respectively.
