After graduating from college in 2009, Bland worked in the administration department of ‘Cook’s Direct’ in Illinois. By 2015, she had secured a position as an associate for the summer programme at her previous college. In August 2015, Bland was scheduled to return to this position. In 2015, civil unrest and police brutality were at an all-time high in the United States, especially in the African-American community. Bland began posting videos, thoughts, and messages on various topics, including the mistreatment of African-Americans by police, at this time. Encinia initiated the traffic stop of Bland on July 10 for a minor traffic violation, which escalated into a heated exchange. She was arrested and charged with assaulting a law enforcement officer.

This exchange was reviewed during the trial, and Encinia was placed on administrative leave because the arrest was unnecessary. Bland was arrested and placed in a cell by herself at the Waller County Jail after being transported there. At 9:00 am on July 13, a female officer discovered Bland hanging in her cell. Asphyxiation was identified as the cause of her death in the autopsy report, which determined that her death was a suicide. She was laid to rest on July 22. Although she was never medically diagnosed, Bland suffered from depression and PTSD. Her prior Facebook post revealed this information. After multiple F.B.I. and D.P.S. investigations, Encinia was indicted for perjury and sentenced to one year in prison and a $4,000 fine.
