His parents divorced when he was five years old, and he remained with his father, who remarried. In five years, Hanks attended ten different institutions before settling in Oakland, California, where he attended Skyline High School.

Following his high school graduation in 1974, he attended Chabot College in Hayward, California. Later, he transferred to California State University, Sacramento, but in 1977 he pulled out to pursue an acting career.

In the late 1970s, Hanks began his career by starring in a number of low-budget films and television programmes.
