Weird Al Yankovic Biography: Alfred Matthew Yankovic was born on October 23, 1959, in Downey, California. He grew up in Lynwood, which is right next door. As a child who grew up alone, he started playing the accordion when he was seven years old. A seller from a nearby music school asked him if he would like to take lessons on the instrument. The piano is what Yankovic says his parents chose because of polka star Frank Yankovic. He continued his studies at the school for three years before going out on his own. Yankovic, who is a big fan of Elton John, said that “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” was “partly responsible for my learning to play rock ‘n roll on the accordion.”

He also said that his funny and parody music was influenced by Frank Zappa, Tom Lehrer, Stan Freberg, Spike Jones, Allan Sherman, Shel Silverstein, and “all the other fantastically sick and twisted musicians he was introduced to through the Dr. Demento Radio Show.”

In 1979, Yankovic sent Dr. Demento, a famous radio host who specializes in strange things, “My Bologna,” a parody of “My Sharona” by The Knack. Capitol put out the song as a single because it was so popular. Demento wrote and sang it in a bathroom across from his college radio station. Nod to Queen’s hit song “Another One Bites the Dust,” “Another One Rides the Bus.” “I Love Rocky Road” is a parody of “I Love Rock ‘n Roll” by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. It was made for his second album, “In 3-D,” which came out in 1984, one year after “Beat It” by Michael Jackson became the most famous music video of all time. TV viewers went crazy for the “Eat It” video, which looked a lot like the “Beat It” video. The Grammy-winning song got to No. 15.

After a long break, “Smells Like Nirvana,” a spoof of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” came out in 1992. The record sold over 104,000 copies in its first week on the Billboard 200 album chart. Yahoo, Nerdist, College Humor, the “Wall Street Journal,” and YouTube all put him in their 2014 shows called “Mandatory Fun.”
