Anglo Arabic Schools & Delhi College Old Boys’ Association felicitates Jamia Millia VC Najma Akhtar

The function was attended among others by former Chief Election Commissioner Dr. S.Y. Quraishi, Businessman and President of the India Islamic Cultural Centre Mr. Sirajuddin Qureshi, former Rajya Sabha M.P Mr. Meem Afzal, all alumni of the Anglo Arabic Sr. Sec. School.

Jamia Millia Islamia Vice-Chancellor Prof. Najma Akhtar was felicitated on becoming the first woman to hold the coveted post by Anglo Arabic Schools & Delhi College Old Boys’ Association at a function on Wednesday, July 24.

Delhi Education Society runs one of the oldest surviving school– Anglo Arabic Senior Secondary School and Anglo Arabic Model School located at Ajmeri Gate and Shafiq Memorial Sr. Sec. School at Bara Hindu Rao, Delhi.

The function was attended among others by former Chief Election Commissioner Dr. S.Y. Quraishi, Businessman and President of the India Islamic Cultural Centre Mr. Sirajuddin Qureshi, former Rajya Sabha M.P Mr. Meem Afzal, all alumni of the Anglo Arabic Sr. Sec. School.

Speaking on the occasion Prof. Akhtar highlighted the need for educating girls and asked the governing body members to ensure that they are admitted in the school in equal ratio as that of boys. She suggested that to achieve the objective, parents of girls should be taken into confidence and convinced to send them for schooling.

She said that besides providing education, the schools run by the society should also impart proper career guidance to enable students to choose right career.

Dr. S.Y. Quraishi, who is the member of the governing body of the society and patron, traced the history of the school, founded in 1696, and said that even the founder of the Aligarh Muslim University(AMU) Sir Sayyid Ahmad Khan was its alumnus. It is a matter of pride, he said, that Prof. Akhtar is also a product of AMU and is now heading JMI as its first women VC.
