Angola Independence Day 2023: History

In Angola, Angola Independence Day is observed annually to commemorate the signing of the Alvor Agreement by the Portuguese government and the official conclusion of the Angolan War for Independence.

Portuguese incursions into African territories commenced with the explicit aim of subjugating the inhabitants in exchange for minerals, other valuable resources, and enslavement. Following the establishment of settlements in several nations, they ultimately embarked on an endeavor to subjugate the region presently recognized as Angola.

After numerous incursions and conflicts, the Portuguese formally conquered Angola, which they subsequently designated as an overseas dominion.

During the brief period when Angola was relegated to the status of a colony rather than dominion, its indigenous inhabitants grew increasingly cognizant of the discrimination they were subjected to.

Upon regaining the status of dominion, Angolan citizens developed a stronger sense of nationalism and initiated the formation of political parties and organizations to safeguard their interests.

When the Portuguese attempted to impose cotton cultivation on the natives against their will, conflict ensued. A revolt ensued among the populace, culminating in an uprising that was ultimately quelled. Then, a thirteen-year guerilla war ensued, culminating in the overthrow of the Portuguese-established corporate dictatorship by a leftist army rebellion.

Following that, various political factions and parties engaged in armed conflict, which ultimately culminated in a civil war. The formal conclusion of the war came when the Alvor Agreement, a treaty between the Portuguese government and the Angolan party that granted Angola independence from Portugal, was signed.
