HISTORY OF APPRECIATE A DRAGON DAY

The word ‘dragon’ entered the English language for the first time in the early 13th century from Old French dragon, which derives from the Latin word ‘draconem’, which means ‘a large serpent.’

Dragons have always been a part of world history, with the earliest depictions dating back to 4500 B.C. during the Roman and Egyptian eras. Since then, dragons and dragon motifs have appeared in numerous works of contemporary literature, especially those of the fantasy genre.

Appreciate a Dragon Day was created by Donita K. Paul in 2004. The author was promoting the publication of her first book in a five-book series, “DragonSpell.” The book is about a former slave who alters her fate and becomes the dragons’ saviour. It is a celebration of dragons in literature, along with literacy and popular culture.

Dragons are diverse in appearance, with some resembling the gargoyles found on mediaeval church spires. Others are multiheaded hydras that emerge from the water. Others consist of wyverns, basilisks, and other mythical creatures with tenuous ties to reality.

The concept of dragons interacting with humans ultimately fills our minds with awe and inspires us to indulge in fanciful thoughts.
