Carnival Monday 2023: Carnival Monday is celebrated annually on the Monday preceding Ash Wednesday, which falls on February 20 this year. This festival is renowned for its abundance of music, dance, and food. And yes, the day is a national holiday, so people of all ages can dance!
Similar to other cultural celebrations, the Carnival has a distinct past. The tradition is said to have originated in Saint Vincent; consequently, whoever settled in the region adapted to the celebratory custom and spread it around the world. Additionally, the original Carnival festivities were modified. When the Kalinagos settled in St. Vincent, for instance, they merged their festivals with Carnival. Nonetheless, the festival’s sole purpose remained the consumption of delectable food and the holding of activities that expressed the joy felt by the people.
Soon, lands were conquered by people of various backgrounds, and new people began to participate in the Carnival tradition. The festival continued to be held even after the British took control. In 1494, new customs, such as wearing a mask during the ceremony, were introduced in Rome. Similarly, this tradition originated in Africa.
After slavery was abolished, these festivities spread. In fact, Africans utilised the festival to showcase their culture and traditions. This angered the colonisers, who were determined to eradicate the slaves’ identities. During the 17th century, slaves were prohibited from celebrating Carnival, which, as expected, led to unrest. In 1899, despite the ban, the slaves rebelled and celebrated the festival.
Even if they have migrated to other countries, tens of thousands of people return home to celebrate the festival. Monday of Carnival is celebrated annually with large parades, music, and extravagant decorations.
