Children of Fallen Patriots Day is annually observed on May 13. The purpose of this day is to recognise the suffering and sacrifice of children whose parents have been martyred. The purpose is to honour the children whose lives have been tragically altered by a parent’s death in the line of duty. Children of Fallen Patriots Day was founded in 2014 by the Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation, an organisation that provides financial education and educational counselling to Gold Star scholars with a parent who was martyred. The 13th of May was selected as Children of Fallen Patriots Day because on that date in 1864, Arlington National Cemetery was established.

Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, and Coast Guard are the components of the United States Armed Forces. The United States Armed Forces date back to June 14, 1775, when the Continental Army was established prior to the Declaration of Independence and the subsequent founding of the United States. Soon after, the Continental Navy and Continental Marines were formed to assist in the American Revolutionary War. These forces were ultimately disbanded following the Revolution. Between 1784 and 1798, the U.S. Army, Navy, and Marine Forces were established. The President of the United States held the position of Commander-in-Chief of the entire Armed Forces. In 1790, the United States Coast Guard was established as the Revenue Cutter Service. The United States Air Force was organised on September 18, 1947. The United States Space Force was established in December 2019 as the first new military branch in over 72 years. Prior to this, the Air Force Space Command served as a significant Air Force command.

The members of the Armed Forces run the risk of losing their lives in the course of duty. Frequently, these martyrs leave behind families, particularly children. The purpose of Children of Fallen Patriots Day is to recognise the suffering and sacrifice of children who have lost a parent to sacrifice.
