After her 15-year-old marriage, the couple settled in Little Rock, Arkansas, and began publishing “The Arkansas Weekly” newspaper. Bates was not only an editor, but also a regular contributor of cause-oriented articles.
To make a larger impact, Bates worked closely with numerous local Civil Rights organisations, including the Arkansas chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, where he served as president (N.A.A.C.P.). Bates is a household name due to her consistent efforts to eradicate racism and her work with the government.
