Daisy Gatson Bates Day is a public holiday in Arkansas that commemorates the life of the civil rights activist who was instrumental in the 1957 integration crisis at Little Rock Central High School. Arkansans observe her contribution to society by taking the day off, with schools and most businesses closed.

Bates was born in Huttig, Arkansas in 1913. Her mother was murdered by three white men when she was only three years old, leaving an indelible mark on her impressionable mind. This tragic and life-altering event forced her to confront the pervasive problem of racism and discrimination based on the colour of people’s skin, compelling her to devote her life to eradicating racial injustice.

After her 15-year-old marriage, the couple settled in Little Rock, Arkansas, and began publishing “The Arkansas Weekly” newspaper. The publication was launched with the intention of advocating for social and civil rights and serving as the voice of African Americans across the nation. Bates was not only an editor, but also a regular contributor of cause-oriented articles.

To make a larger impact, Bates worked closely with numerous local Civil Rights organisations, including the Arkansas chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, where he served as president (N.A.A.C.P.). Bates is a household name due to her consistent efforts to eradicate racism and her work with the government.
