The background of Day of Cantabria Institutions

Most of us may believe that Spain is a culturally homogeneous nation, but this is not the case. In actuality, Spain is composed of numerous autonomous regions. Each possesses a certain degree of autonomy and unique cultural identities. Cantabria, located on the northern littoral, is an example.

Cantabria was home to one of the most ferocious Celtic tribes in the world when it first appeared in documented history, centuries ago. The region’s history dates back to between 36 000 and 9 000 B.C. There are 6,500 caverns in Cantabria, 60 of which contain Palaeolithic cave paintings. These caves reveal a fascinating history.

Despite the Cantabrians’ courageous resistance, the region ultimately fell under the dominion of the Roman Empire. Cantabria was among the final regions to collapse. The Roman conquest ushered in a period of unrest during which Visigoths and Moors vied for control of Cantabria. Finally, the region amalgamated with local kingdoms like Castile and Asturias.

At the turn of the 18th century, renewed interest in the distinctive Cantabrian identity emerged. Several cultural and social revitalization movements followed. Around this period, the Cantabrians become committed to establishing an independent province. The first unsuccessful endeavour occurred at the turn of the century. At the conclusion of the 18th century, the wheels started turning again. In 1778, the province of Cantabria was established officially. Cantabria is currently an autonomous territory in Spain. The Day of Cantabria Institutions commemorates the path to autonomy and the liberation of the people.
