In the early 19th century, prominent Romantic poets such as Byron, Coleridge, and Wordsworth praised the invigorating majesty of the wild countryside. By the end of the 19th century, James Bryce, a member of parliament, had initiated a campaign for public access to the surrounding areas and a bill that authorised unrestricted roaming. The bill was defeated, but the campaign continued.

At the beginning of the 20th century, there was a growing demand for public access to the countryside, particularly as a result of extensive industrialization and urbanisation. In the 1930s, public demand for greater access to the countryside was at its peak, and by 1932, people were engaging in “mass trespassing.” By 1936, leisure activity enthusiasts and nature conservationists urged the government to establish national parks. In 1949, the government enacted legislation to establish national parks in order to preserve and enhance their natural attractiveness. In addition, recreational opportunities for the public were provided.

During the 1950s, new national parks were established in England and Wales, as well as throughout the rest of England and Europe. The National Parks Act was enacted by the Scottish Parliament in 2000, resulting in the establishment of two Scottish National Parks. In 2002, they were Loch Lomond and The Trossachs, and in 2003, they were the Cairngorms. Since then, national parks have been a source of pride for governments and treasured destinations for locals and tourists to appreciate nature. Currently, volunteers assist with the preservation and maintenance of national parks.
