The background of Fiji Day

Fiji Day marks two significant historical occurrences in the archipelago: Fiji’s annexation to the United Kingdom in 1874 and its subsequent attainment of independence in 1970. Despite the initial European exploration of the archipelago occurring in 1643 under the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman, the British colonial government seized authority over Fiji on October 10, 1874. Fiji Week concludes on Fiji Day with a series of religious and cultural celebrations honoring the ethnic diversity of the 110 islands inhabited by Fijian and Indian people.

The principal festivities of Fiji Day occur in Levuka, the location where the cession deed was originally executed. This occurrence commenced a 96-year progression that culminated in the attainment of independence by Fiji on October 10, 1970. These events promote local tourism while paying homage to Fiji’s illustrious past.

On this national holiday, Fijians don traditional attire and enact the events that transpired on October 10, 1874. Albert Park in the capital (Suva) serves as a gathering place for dignitaries, local officials, and citizens to attend addresses delivered by the President and Prime Minister of Fiji. The park was bequeathed to Prince Albert, the consort of Queen Victoria, in recognition of his significance as a historic site. Fiji Day also features military parades, the ceremonial discharge of artillery, and the performance of the national anthem, in addition to the aforementioned celebrations. Acts of homage to the cultures of the numerous Fijian communities are performed by the other inhabitants of the islands.
