Frequent Flyer Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

The concept of a frequent flyer was first proposed in the 1950s, when airlines monitored their customers' travel activity until the 1960s.

Frequent Flyer Day is annually observed on May 1. This day is for you if you are a jet setter or someone who frequently flies across the United States or the globe. The Frequent Flier programme is an incentive programme developed by airlines to reward consumer loyalty. Whether you’re travelling for business or leisure, you’re in for a treat if you’re enrolled in the programme. Celebrate this day by reaping the benefits of your accumulated points. Access to airport lounges, as well as more air travel, class upgrades, and priority reservations, make today the best day to feel like a V.I.P.

The background of Frequent Flyer Day

The concept of a frequent flyer was first proposed in the 1950s, when airlines monitored their customers’ travel activity until the 1960s. Texas International Airlines, which merged with Continental in 1982, established the first mileage-based Frequent Flyer Programme (F.F.P.) in 1979.

American Airlines did not popularise its Frequent Flyer Programme, now known as AAdvantage, until 1981, when it was given the name AAdvantage. This marketing strategy aimed not only to reward consumers but also to encourage customer loyalty. They kept account of the number of miles travelled by each member and devised a system based on “one mile earned for every mile travelled.” They included Hyatt hotel accommodations as well as Hertz rental vehicles, and the incentive programme was a resounding success, prompting their competitors to implement similar systems immediately.

United Airlines introduced Mileage Plus in the same year as American Airlines, upping the ante by introducing a 5,000-mile enrollment incentive. In subsequent months, Delta Airlines also introduced the Frequent Flyer programme, which was renamed SkyMiles in 1995. More and more airlines adopted the reward system, permanently altering the travel industry. In 1981, American Airlines began the programme with only 283 000 members. Currently, it has more than 46 million members. The F.F.P. is without a doubt one of the most effective incentive programmes in any industry.
