Okay, we cannot deny the obvious: hagfish bring an entirely new level of mucus and yuck with them. Without a mandible, bones, or scales, this species of fish is not aesthetically pleasing. In addition, they have similarly unsettling eating patterns. Hagfish feed on the corpses of marine creatures that are dead or dying. They accomplish this by sliding into the body and consuming it from the inside out, leaving only the epidermis behind.

Nevertheless, as repulsive as this species may be, it is necessary for maintaining a healthy ecosystem. Whether it is apparent to the naked eye or not, each organism in nature serves a purpose in maintaining the proper functioning of the world. All creatures, regardless of size, are essential, and their absence can result in unfavourable conditions. In the case of hagfish, they are essential for the prompt removal of deceased marine animals and the recycling of nutrients and carbon. Without them, the ocean floor would be covered in dead animals, resulting in an unsanitary environment for the remaining marine life.
