Harvey Milk Day 2023: Date, History, How to Participate in Harvey Milk Day

In 1978, his life was tragically cut short by a political rival who opposed Milk's liberal views after he was elected San Francisco city supervisor and served for one year.

On May 22, we celebrate the life and legacy of Harvey Milk, the first openly homosexual California politician and a leader of the American Civil Rights Movement. Harvey Milk was included on Time magazine’s list of “The 100 Most Important People of the 20th Century.” Milk advocated not only for the LGBT community, but also for all minorities. He believed in secure, resilient communities and supported public education, affordable child care, and equal rights for all.

The background of Harvey Milk Day

In 1978, his life was tragically cut short by a political rival who opposed Milk’s liberal views after he was elected San Francisco city supervisor and served for one year. Harvey Milk’s contributions to the cause of equality for all people have been acknowledged in a number of ways, including the issuance of a stamp featuring his image, the posthumous conferring of the Medal of Freedom, and the establishment of a holiday in his honour. Harvey Milk Day became a legal holiday in 2009 when then-Governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger signed it into law. Despite Milk’s passing, his legacy lives on through the Milk Foundation, established in his honour by his nephew Stuart Milk.

Harvey Milk campaigned on a platform of equal rights for all individuals regardless of gender, nationality, sexual orientation, or race. Although we’ve made significant progress, there are still significant voids. Depending on the field, women presently earn only 70-93% of what their male counterparts do. The use of transgender restrooms is being debated on a state-by-state basis, and the immigration moratorium is extremely controversial. The struggle for equality that Harvey Milk gave his life for is just as relevant today as it was in 1978.

Harvey Milk knew he was jeopardising his life when he began to advocate for equality. As a politician who is homosexual, he received numerous assassination threats. However, this did not prevent him from advocating for equal rights. As city supervisor, he fought against a statewide initiative that discriminated against the employment of homosexuals in public institutions. Harvey Milk won the conflict and established the Castro Village Association, which served as a model for LGBT communities throughout the United States. Milk desired for this message to be disseminated: “If a bullet should enter my brain, let that bullet destroy every closet door.” He devoted his life for the equality ideal of the United States.

Given the current state of division in the country, it is essential to revisit a fundamental civil liberties lesson that Harvey Milk advocated. He believed that every individual was significant and needed representation. He believed that elected officials should advocate on behalf of those whose voices were not being heard or who lacked the ability to communicate for themselves. He advocated for diversity in governance because he believed that people needed to see themselves in all branches of government. He sincerely believed in a government of, by, and for the people.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE IN HARVEY MILK DAY

Fly a rainbow flag

The rainbow flag, also known as the gay rights flag, advocates the LGBT community’s social and political causes. It has also been referred to as the peace flag and the liberty flag. No matter which name you prefer, it is a genuine representation of Harvey Milk, who believed in peace, freedom, and equal rights for all.

Read Milk’s “Hope” speech.

Harvey Milk gave the “Hope” speech when he announced his candidature, and he subsequently delivered an expanded version at the 1978 Gay Pride Parade in San Francisco. Even though the speech begins with a joke, its content is serious, and he believes that “you must give people hope.” He was also aware that he was fighting a difficult campaign for the rights and equality of homosexuals. He stated, “The first gay people we elect must be strong.” He concluded that “Hope is never silent”

Make a contribution to the Harvey Milk Foundation

The Harvey Milk Foundation was established after Milk’s death by his nephew, Stuart Milk, and Milk’s campaign manager, Anne Kronenberg, who wanted Milk’s message of equality to be realised. The mission of the non-profit organisation is to commemorate the diversity of humanity and ensure that no group is denied the rights accorded by society based on gender, sexual orientation, race, religion, age, ability, or ethnicity. Visit milkfoundation.org for information on how to support this organisation.
