Prominent figures in the Indian National Movement advocated for the establishment of autonomy for both states; however, despite India attaining independence, this objective remained dormant. Despite this, the Hindus and the Sikhs persisted in their joint endeavors to secure autonomy, intensifying their petitions, appeals, and overall efforts.
In the end, the Indian government established a commission to examine the preexisting state of Punjab and the boundaries of Haryana. Both contained clusters of additional smaller localities. The languages spoken by the indigenous population played a significant role in this partition, as the commission suggested that Haryana be established as an independent state from Punjab, with a shared capital.
