This day is a reminder that people should extend their compassion and go the extra mile to lend a helping hand. Discover the various ways you can celebrate Herbert Hoover Day.

The background of Herbert Hoover Day

Herbert Hoover was born in a rural Iowa village on August 10, 1874. His childhood was spent in Oregon, where he manifested an early interest in mathematics and underground work. In 1891, he pursued his passion by pursuing mining engineering at Stanford University. This is where he met Lou Henry, his future wife.

The couple moved to China, where Hoover worked as the chief engineer for a private Chinese company. However, the Boxer Rebellion captured the Hoovers in June 1900. This organisation launched a violent campaign to expel all aliens from the mainland. During this time, his wife worked in hospitals, while he ran outreach programmes, directed barricades, and rescued children in peril.

When Hoover returned to the United States, he had served as Secretary of Commerce during the administrations of Harding and Coolidge. During this time, he sampled the waters of politics and investigated the potential for public service. In 1928, he became the Republican nominee for president. Eventually, he won the national elections during a crucial period in the United States: the beginning of the Great Depression and the decline of the stock market. Hoover, acutely aware of the situation, implemented tax cuts, increased the budget for public works, and balanced federal expenses.

His administration was greeted with both acclaim and criticism. Others praised his charitable efforts to aid Americans, while others criticised his lack of involvement in international affairs. This affected others’ perceptions of him, which led to his electoral defeat in 1933. In 1933, he departed the White House.

Hoover spent his final days in New York and died at the age of 90 on October 20, 1964.
