International Heritage Breeds Day is annually observed at the conclusion of the third week of May. This year, it occurs on May 20. It seeks to protect farm animals and rare animal breeds from cruel treatment and extinction, such as the Iron Age pig, Shetland duck, and Northern Dairy Shorthorn cattle. The holiday also raises awareness of other farm animals, particularly those whose populations are declining.
For decades, conservationists have expressed concern about endangered breeds. The American Minor Breeds Conservancy (A.M.B.C.) was not established until the mid-1970s, when the importance of conserving animal species was brought to the forefront.
The mission of the A.M.B.C. was to protect uncommon breeds and preserve the diversity of livestock and poultry. It gathered together individuals from across the industry, including farmers, the general public, and enthusiasts, in order to raise awareness of the threats rare breeds face. The organisation accomplished this by commemorating the diversity of livestock for a week. Its campaigns reached millions of people, and people began to notice the declining animal population. The week-long celebrations eventually led to the establishment of International Heritage Breeds Day. On the holiday, farmers and ranchers offer community members farm excursions, workshops, and lectures. Several years later, the conservancy expanded the event internationally.
International Heritage Breeds Day received support from animal conservation organisations such as Rare Breeds Survival Trust, Asocriollanos, Save Foundation, the Smithsonian, and SVF Biodiversity Preservation Project, Heritage Livestock Club, Rare Breed Conservation Society, and many others when it expanded internationally. These organisations provided producers, breeders, and the general public with guidance on how to preserve rare breeds. As a result, International Heritage Breeds Day became a movement and not just a passion, allowing agriculturists and conservationists to concentrate on preserving biodiversity so that uncommon breeds would have a greater chance of survival.
