The history of spicy food

For over 6,000 years, spices have been used to add taste to food and for their numerous health advantages. For instance, spices contain anti-inflammatory and curative qualities. Due of these factors, spices gained popularity throughout antiquity.

Ancient Greeks brought Eastern spices to the Mediterranean, including pepper, cassia, cinnamon, and ginger, since spices and herbs had a part in medical knowledge. Hippocrates reportedly wrote on herbs and spices like saffron, cinnamon, thyme, coriander, mint, and marjoram between 460 and 377 B.C. Theophrastus, also regarded as the “Father of Botany,” wrote about 600 spices and plants in his two books between 372 B.C. and 286 B.C. Spices were frequently used by the Romans in spice-flavored drinks, spice-scented balms, and spice-scented oils. Due to their medicinal characteristics, several spices were utilised in poultices and healing plasters. Curcumin was also utilised in Ayurvedic medicine to treat illnesses such as arthritis, autoimmunity, headaches, and nausea.

There is more. Capsaicin, the key ingredient in chilli peppers, has been shown to kill cancer cells. A 2015 study conducted in the United States and China indicated that consuming spicy food six or seven days per week reduced mortality rates by 14%. Therefore, if you have never enjoyed spicy foods, it is time to alter your diet. Trust us; this is a decision you will forever appreciate.

Why we love spicy food

We love spicy food because it tastes great and it gives us a little bit of a rush. It’s also a way to show our friends and family that we’re adventurous eaters. And, let’s be honest, it’s just fun to eat something that makes your nose run and your eyes water.

How to make your own hot and spicy food

If you like hot and spicy food, then you’ll be happy to know that January 16 is International Hot and Spicy Food Day! Here are some tips on how to make your own hot and spicy dishes at home.

One easy way to add spice to your food is to use fresh chili peppers. If you can’t find fresh chili peppers, you can also use dried chili pepper flakes or powder. Another way to add heat is to use hot sauce or salsa. Just be careful not to add too much, as it can make the dish too spicy.

If you want to tone down the spice level of a dish, you can add dairy products such as milk, yogurt, or sour cream. This will help balance out the heat of the spices. You can also try adding sugar or honey to offset the Spice level.

So, get creative and experiment with different ways of adding heat to your favorite dishes. And don’t forget to share your creations with us on social media using the hashtag #InternationalHotAndSpicyFoodDay!
