International Snail Papers Day is annually observed on April 7. What are snail documents exactly? This is a synonym for periodicals. The name derives from the reality that, in the era of digital news and social media, they report the news much later than other outlets. However, newspapers continue to be a popular news source for many individuals. This day honours newspapers and those who labour tirelessly every day to ensure that we receive the news.

The background of International Snail Papers Day

The origins of written news can be traced back to the Roman Empire in 59 B.C. Rome was the centre of the western world and regarded as the centre of innovation. Acta Diuma, a piece of hand-carved news on a stone or metal sheet, is attributed by historians as the first regular written news source for the Romans. Julius Caesar made Acta Diuma public in 59 BC, after initially keeping it a secret from the public. In 1605, Johann Carolus published “Reiation alier Fumemmen und gedenckwudigen Historien” in Germany, which was the first newspaper to be printed in Europe during the 17th century.

After the advent of advertising in the 19th century, newspapers became more affordable to a much larger population. The increase in ad revenue was proportional to newspaper circulation, and the majority of publications were owned by affluent individuals who used newspapers to express their political views. In 1833, Benjamin Day published the first edition of the New York Sun, launching the American newspaper industry.

In the 1920s and 1930s, radio transmission was the first to pose a threat to newspapers, followed by television in the 1950s. But newspapers were generally viewed as parallel media rather than direct competition; however, in the last 25 years, due to the rapid rise of digital media, the print media has not been doing particularly well. Newspapers face competition from news websites and the growth of tabloid journalism.
