Kosovo Constitution Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

Modern-day Kosovo has been a part of a number of empires and nations throughout the millennia. It was governed by the Ottoman Empire for approximately four centuries before it was ceded to Serbia following the First Balkan War.

Kosovo Constitution Day is annually observed on April 9. The holiday commemorates the day in 2008 when the Kosovo people ratified their constitution. Kosovo, a minor landlocked territory, borders Serbia, Albania, Macedonia, and Montenegro. Part of the former Yugoslavia, the nation was the target of airstrikes led by NATO in 1998 and 1999, known as the Kosovo War. The 2008 constitution intended to unify the nation and establish a democratic and peaceful state for its citizens. In the constitution of 2008, Kosovo’s ambition for Euro-Atlantic integration is also stated.

The background of Kosovo Constitution Day

Modern-day Kosovo has been a part of a number of empires and nations throughout the millennia. It was governed by the Ottoman Empire for approximately four centuries before it was ceded to Serbia following the First Balkan War. It was divided between Serbia and Montenegro before being incorporated into Yugoslavia. Until Nazi Germany took possession of Kosovo during the second world war, Italian forces governed the area. By the conclusion of World War II, Kosovo had returned to Yugoslavia.

When Kosovo Albanians began demanding complete republic status in 1981, riots broke out and were violently suppressed. In the following decade, political leaders cultivated the dread of the Serbian minority in Kosovo, while Kosovo Albanians protested for a separate state. The police and military waged a violent campaign against demonstrators in 1998. After nearly eighty days of NATO-led bombardment, Belgrade lost control of Kosovo, and Kosovo began the process of achieving independence.

On June 10, 1999, the United Nations Security Council adopted Resolution 1244, which served as the foundation for constitutional developments in Kosovo. On February 17, 2008, Kosovo officially proclaimed its independence from Serbia. On February 18, the United States was the first nation to recognise Kosovo as a sovereign nation. Several nations from around the world have officially acknowledged Kosovo’s independence from Serbia. The constitution was prepared on April 7, 2008, and the Kosovar people ratified it on April 9.
