While everyone may have worn Levi’s jeans at some point, they may or may not be aware that February 26 is Levi Strauss Day. A day dedicated to Levi Strauss, the creator of the jeans brand that we all adore. Why else would it be celebrated on his birthday? Levi Strauss & Co. is the original manufacturer of blue jeans. This iconic brand’s history spans over two centuries.
Levi Strauss, born on February 26, 1829, founded his company in San Francisco in 1853. Strauss was born in Germany before moving to the United States with his mother and siblings at the age of 18 in 1847. He joined his brothers in their dry goods wholesale business, J. Strauss Brother & Co., in New York. Before becoming an American citizen in January 1853, he sold his brothers’ supplies there.
Strauss opened his wholesale business, Levi Strauss & Co., in San Francisco later that year. Strauss sold his brothers’ merchandise in New York City. These items included apparel, bags, napkins, bedding, and even combs. Before moving on to jeans, he moved on to tents. One of his customers, Jacob W. Davis, went into business with Strauss to produce blue jeans, thereby becoming the inventor of riveted denim pants in 1871 and receiving a patent for the design in 1873.
However, how did Davis enter the scene? Davis, a tailor himself, devised the design in response to a woman’s request for sturdy work pants for her husband, a woodcutter. Using copper rivets to reinforce the stitching, he manufactured pants from denim purchased from the Levi Strauss store. Davis needed to patent his design because demand for this fashionable new garment had increased to the point where he was at capacity and unable to meet it. Strauss stepped in financially; he assisted Davis in patenting the jeans and issuing the license, thereby establishing them as successful business partners.
He is an example of living the American Dream. No matter where one comes from, one can make it big in every way.
The jeans for any occasion look great with everything — from tees to shirts to jackets and blazers, as well as most colours. Here’s yet another occasion to wear your favourite Levi’s jeans.
The charitable Strauss had a foundation; he made donations to orphanages and helped the needy. We could all learn from that and do the same on this day.
