Maldives Independence Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

In the past, the British Empire governed the Maldives, along with a large number of other nations. However, despite numerous attempts, they did not become a British Protectorate until 1887.

Independence Day is observed annually on July 26. After 77 years as a protectorate, the holiday commemorates the Maldives’ independence from the British Empire. The Maldives is a beautiful country with distinctive, picturesque beaches. This event features the National Cadet Corps and performances by schoolchildren dressed in vibrant attire. In addition, there is a flag-raising ceremony. It is a public holiday, enabling the majority of Maldivians to celebrate with their families at home rather than at work or school.

The background of Maldives Independence Day

In the past, the British Empire governed the Maldives, along with a large number of other nations. However, despite numerous attempts, they did not become a British Protectorate until 1887. The Maldives only benefited from their new status because it prevented British interference in their internal affairs. Prior to engaging in any international activity, the government of the United Kingdom must be consulted. In exchange for cooperation from the Maldives, the British offered to defend the island nation.

On July 26, 1965, complete autonomy was conferred to the Maldives. The significance of independence lies in the fact that it allowed the nation to control its economy and develop as it saw appropriate. The end of World War II resulted in the independence of two British-colonized neighbouring countries, Sri Lanka and India, which inspired the Maldives to pursue their own independence.

It became even more imperative when, from 1959 to 1963, three southern atolls were claimed as part of the brief Suvadive Republic. Within two months of attaining independence, the Maldives were accepted into the United Nations. Their national flag was raised at the headquarters on October 12, 1965.
