The background of May Day

May Day has had various meanings, celebrations, and representations over the years and decades. The significance of seasonal change has been the most significant variable between nations.

May Day is one of the four ancient Celtic cross-quarter days, which makes it an astronomical holiday as it occurs between the March equinox and the June solstice. Beltane was a spring celebration that included dancing, chanting, special bonfires, and the decoration of house doors and animals with yellow May flowers and ribbons. The name Beltane was derived from the Celtic word for May. During this time, in various Irish communities, people would visit special wells, believing that the Bethane dew would offer beauty and youth to those who were exposed to it.

During the Middle Ages, households in English villages had maypoles for May Day celebrations. Villagers would venture into the woods to locate maypoles erected by cities and towns. Because maypoles came in various heights, villages would compete to see who could build the tallest one. The pole represented masculine fertility, while the baskets and wreaths represented female fertility, so people would dance around them.

In the 19th century, May Day took on a new significance. May Day is also known as International Workers’ Day in recognition of labour rights and the eight-hour workday in the United States.

Different cultures developed their own traditions in accordance with their beliefs as time passed. Europeans and Americans celebrate May Day by creating flower crowns, dancing around a maypole, and sharing flower baskets with their loved ones. In Hawaii, May Day is known as Lei Day, a commemoration of the aloha spirit and the flower-gifting tradition. What better way to celebrate than with your closest friends and family?
