National Amber Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

Amber is a female-predominant name with antecedents in the Arabic and Celtic languages. Either the term "ferocious" or the amber-colored gemstone with the same name can be associated with this word.

On March 28, National Amber Day honours individuals with the name Amber. Amber is a popular girl’s name derived from the Arabic term ‘ambar’, which means ‘jewel’ and refers to the fossilized, yellowish-brown tree resin found primarily on pine trees in the Baltic Sea area. This “tree sap” is essentially transformed into the gemstone amber through a process involving persistent heat and pressure. It also has French origins, where it meant “jewel-colored.” It is a gem name that first appeared as a female name in the nineteenth century, when other jewel names were also prevalent.

The background of National Amber Day

Amber is a female-predominant name with antecedents in the Arabic and Celtic languages. Either the term “ferocious” or the amber-colored gemstone with the same name can be associated with this word.

Late in the 13th century in Anglo-Latin and around 1400 A.D. in English, the term amber was extended to include fossil resins from the Baltic, and since then, this sense of the word has become the predominant one as ambergris’s use has declined. The fact that both were found washed up on seashores may have led some individuals to believe that they are connected in some way. It is also plausible that this is an entirely unique word with a murky origin. Historically, Baltic fossil resin and ambergris, also known as “gray amber,” were distinguished as “white amber” and “yellow amber” The French call the two varieties of amber gris ambre and yellow ambre, respectively.

The name Amber did not become popular until the 1950s, despite its existence since the 1800s. In 1880, when the name first appeared, there were nine infants named Amber. Its popularity in the 1950s is most likely due to Kathleen Winsor’s 1944 novel “Forever Amber.” From 1981 to 1993, it was one of the top 20 names given to baby females in the United States. Since then, Amber has fallen steadily in popularity, and in 2018 it ranked 471st in popularity among females.
