Its popularity in the 1950s is most likely due to Kathleen Winsor’s 1944 novel “Forever Amber.” From 1981 to 1993, it was one of the top 20 names given to baby females in the United States. Since then, Amber has fallen steadily in popularity, and in 2018 it ranked 471st in popularity among females.
