Early on, he demonstrated an aptitude for innovation, and within two years he had earned his Ph.D. and been offered a position.

The discovery of the antidote for arsenic poisoning by the 22-year-old Bunsen was a significant achievement. But the invention for which he is best known today, the Bunsen burner, became his focus in 1852, when he accepted a position at the University of Heidelberg and was assured a new laboratory for his research and teaching.

The architects intended to use gas throughout the building for illumination and laboratory burners. But gas burners were problematic due to the intensity of the flame and their ease of use. While the architects worked on constructing Bunsen’s new laboratory, Bunsen himself designed a method for making laboratory gas burners more efficient. Using Isaac Newton’s principle of light refraction, he created a gas-burning apparatus that, depending on the airflow, could produce four flames of various colours and intensities.

In 1857, Bunsen published a description of his 50 burners so that his colleagues could employ the design. He never patented the idea despite its success, as he believed that science should be for the benefit of all and not the profit of one. 22-year-old Bunsen discovered the antidote to arsenic poisoning while working at the University of Gottingen, and 9 years later, his discovery saved his own life when an arsenic compound detonated in his face.

In 1841, Bunsen invented the zinc-carbon cell, which made batteries more affordable by replacing the costly platinum of previous designs with inexpensive carbon; these batteries continue to power the majority of domestic devices, such as TV remotes and children’s toys.
