National Cooper Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

The surname Cooper was first recorded in Sussex, England, but is now widespread throughout the globe. The name is common throughout England, but is uncommon or nonexistent in the northern and south-western counties.

The date of National Cooper Day is March 7. Cooper was the name given to those who manufactured or repaired containers, casks, and buckets. It comes from the Middle English word “couper,” which means “cowper.” It was a highly valued trade during the Middle Ages, as constructing watertight containers was not simple with the equipment available at the time. Cooper is an appropriate name for both males and girls. It is a beautiful brushed metal, but it is also a police term. All liquids were conveyed in tubs and barrels during the Middle Ages, so coopering was a vital aspect of commerce and community life. Coopering is currently practised to produce wooden barrels for genuine ale, whisky, and port (along with any other beverage that must be “matured in wood”).

The background of National Cooper Day

The surname Cooper was first recorded in Sussex, England, but is now widespread throughout the globe. The name is common throughout England, but is uncommon or nonexistent in the northern and south-western counties. It appears to have three main centres: one in the northern midlands, which includes Cheshire, one in Sussex and Hampshire, and one in Suffolk. Coopers are prominent in the counties of Cheshire, Derbyshire, Hampshire, Leicestershire and Rutland, Nottinghamshire, Suffolk, Sussex, Warwickshire, and Worcestershire. This name and its derivatives were introduced to Ulster Province in Ireland by English and Scottish settlers, especially in the seventeenth century.

With the exception of unexplained regions of the North, the name Cooper is fairly equitably distributed throughout the country, as would be expected for such a diverse occupation. Consequently, there are numerous spelling variations. Examples include Couper, Cowper, and even Cupper. Cooper is the fourth variant, though in certain contexts it means ‘worker in copper’ (as in the variant ‘Coppersmith’). Cooper is occasionally spelled Coopper, but this spelling is now uncommon.

In 1176 to 1177 A.D., the name is first recorded in the Pipe Rolls for Surrey. Here, Robert (le) Cupere is mentioned. From 1181 to 1182, two le Cuperes are mentioned in the Pipe Rolls for Norfolk. The French preposition ‘le’ is wholly Norman and gained popularity in England after the Conquest. It was particularly prevalent in occupational names, such as Robert the Cooper, Charles the Baker, etc. During the “Plantations of Ireland” in the 16th and 17th centuries, the English monarchy invaded Ireland, signalling the end of Gaelic rule in Ireland.
