In the 1820s, animal cruelty was first identified as a concern in Britain. In 1824, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (S.P.C.A.) was founded in response to animal cruelty.

National Craft for Your Local Shelters Day is annually observed on July 21. Calling all crafters, do-it-yourselfers, and anyone looking for a cheap way to assist dogs and cats in shelters on this day! The combination of Kitten Season and owner surrender appointments, which increases the number of animals in our care, makes the summer months the busiest time of year for animal shelters across the nation. This simple holiday idea is to create homemade pet supplies and toys and donate them to your local animal shelter. This permits shelters to receive the necessary supplies while also allowing individuals to contribute without spending a significant amount of money. Continue reading to learn about some excellent ideas and items you can immediately make and donate to your local shelter.

The background of National Craft for your Local Shelters Day

In the 1820s, animal cruelty was first identified as a concern in Britain. In 1824, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (S.P.C.A.) was founded in response to animal cruelty. This animal welfare organisation worked to alter public perceptions regarding the treatment of canines.

In 1866, the S.P.C.A. arrived in the United States. It was founded by a man named Henry Burgh, who was criticised and humiliated by many because the majority of people did not care about the plight of canines. The S.P.C.A. continued to evolve, however, as the idea was not abandoned.

Three years later, in 1869, the Women’s S.P.C.A. of Pennsylvania establishes the first animal shelter. Over 150 years later, the institution is still operational, serving as the only open-admission shelter in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, and providing adoption, training, and veterinary services.

Women’s Animal Centre initiated one of the nation’s earliest humane education programmes shortly after its inception. The emphasis remains on collaborating with children to create a more compassionate future for creatures, despite the passage of time.

This day was established in 2012 as a way for individuals to give back to local shelters without adopting or donating money. Many of the resources necessary to construct a shelter can be found in our homes. So, let’s set aside a day to make some engaging shelter essentials. Those of us who are unable to devote the entire day may focus on one of these duties while watching late-night comedy television before going to bed.

5 FACTS Regarding Animal Shelters

In 2021, there will be approximately 3,500 animal shelters in the United States.

Seven million animals are killed annually due to shelter overcrowding.

Many animals end up in shelters as a consequence of homelessness or animal cruelty, but many pet owners also surrender their animals.

Despite the fact that many animals end up in shelters after being abandoned by their owners, twice as many animals enter shelters as strays as opposed to house pets whose owners voluntarily surrendered them.

American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals research indicates that the typical age of dogs surrendered to shelters is between five months and two years.
