National Earmuff Day is annually observed on March 13. Earmuffs are classified as clothing accessories or personal protection equipment (P.P.E) and are designed to safeguard the ears from cold weather or noise. Invented by Chester Greenwood in the nineteenth century, earmuffs are a standard winter accessory and a requirement for construction employees. Earmuffs are popular due to their comfortable fit and practical yet fashionable design. It is a day to commemorate earmuffs by wearing or distributing them.
Chester Greenwood, a 15-year-old youth, is responsible for the invention of earmuffs. In an effort to keep his large ears warm during the winter, he enlisted the assistance of his grandmother. After a day of ice-skating, he fashioned two wire loops in the shape of ears and enlisted his grandmother to weave wool tufts onto the wire loops. They created a functional prototype. This is how the very first earmuffs were created!
The earmuff evolved from a cold-blocking accessory to a form of ear protection, primarily worn by construction workers who had to work in exceedingly loud environments. On March 13, 1877, he was granted a patent for these earplugs, etching his name into the annals of history. Farmington, Maine, is now known as the “Earmuff Capital of the World” as a result of Greenwood’s nearly six-decades-long commitment to ear protection manufacturing.
Earmuffs are now an essential accessory for those who reside in frigid climates. For construction employees, ear protectors, also known as acoustic earmuffs, are a lifesaver or perhaps a “ear-saver.” Some earmuffs have a ‘noise reduction rating’ of 33 decibels, rendering them capable of virtually eliminating all sounds.
Other inventions attributed to Greenwood include an advertising matchbox, a variant of a rake with steel teeth, and a machine for producing wooden reels. The state of Maine designated December 21 as Chester Greenwood Day in his honour. The Chester Greenwood Residence in Farmington is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
