The background of National Fetch Day

Although it is currently a game played between a human and a dog, fetch has its origins tens of thousands of years ago, when survival was the objective. Recent scientific research places the domestication of the first canines by Homo sapiens between 18,000 and 32,000 years ago. Their gradual transformation from hunting adversaries to hunting companions by their wolf ancestors culminated in their widespread domestication as pets throughout the millennia.

In this case, fetch enters into play. Dogs served multiple purposes as hunting companions, one of which was to retrieve food; think of the bloodhound from Duck Hunt, minus the sarcastic chuckle. Those varieties that excelled at this essential characteristic had a greater chance of surviving and developing into the beloved fetch enthusiasts we know today. Over time, pursuits that were considerably less survival-oriented—such as cuddling and occupying the entire bed—supplanted the necessity to procure sustenance. Consequently, the act of fetch evolved into a game of fetch, albeit one that emphasized bonding to a greater extent.

Consequently, why do canines play fetch? They are, as it turns out, psychologically and chemically predisposed to the game. The game of retrieve is enjoyable for them. Their reward regions are stimulated by the “runner’s high” that the exercise induces. This reward region stimulation results in a self-reinforcing cycle. When they are in a happy mood, dogs engage in fetch more.

Additionally, a bonding component is present. A significant impression is made on the relationship between a dog and his human through the activity of fetch, given that dogs are notoriously obedient creatures. It provides the dog (and, dare we say, the human as well) with much-needed exercise and chemically and psychologically strengthens the bond. Canines adore catch. Fetch is a game they engage in with their owners. Canines adore their owners. What exquisite mathematics, indeed!
