Scotland is home to two different origins of the surname Grey. Anschatel Groy of Haute Saone, Normandy, who fought alongside William the Conqueror in 1066 A.D., was the first individual in Northumberland to possess the surname Grey. Anschatel Groy settled in Chillingham, Northumberland, after the conquest was accomplished. There is a Haute Saone department in Normandy known as Gray, Groy, or Croy.
