Jenny was originally a diminutive of Jane or Joanna in the Middle Ages. Still, Jenny is now considered a shortened form of Jennifer. The majority of Jenny’s rise on the charts occurred when Jennifer was at her peak in notoriety. Jenny is no exception to the rule that what rises must fall. Her apex had passed, and as the new millennium began, the name’s decline in the rankings became more pronounced. Jenny is an endearing, youthful alternative for use as a given name. Jennifer and Jenna continue to be the most popular variations of Jenny.
Jennifer is abbreviated as Jenny. Jennifer is the Cornish equivalent of the Welsh name ‘Gwenhwyfar’ (Guinevere), which is composed of the elements ‘gwen’ (fair) and ‘hwyfar’ (smooth). Guinevere and Jennifer are believed to signify ‘the attractive one.’ As a diminutive, Jenny would come to signify ‘little beautiful one.’
Guinevere is the Celtic legend’s most famous protagonist. Guinevere, the most attractive woman on Earth, was the unfaithful wife of King Arthur, having fallen in love with Sir Lancelot and thereby destroying Camelot’s tranquilly. She pursued pleasure regardless of the consequences, as did many other heroines in Celtic mythology. Jennifer is the Cornish form of the name Guinevere. The Cornish, like the Welsh, are a branch of the Celtic people, but their language is distinct from the Gaelic languages of Ireland and Scotland.
Jennifer was eventually discovered by the English in the twentieth century, and it quickly acquired popularity throughout the English-speaking world. Jen and Jenny are both shortened forms of Jennifer, although Jenny has also been used as a given name in its own right. Jenny is currently the most popular name in Norway, where it ranks within the top 25.
